Improvements to Stackpole
Stackpole Quay
Pembrokeshire

Client: The National Trust

Services Provided: Project Management, Civil Engineering

Contract Value: £250,000

Date: 2004

General Description

The works are located at Stackpole Quay, a 19th century structure originally built for the import and export of goods to and from the Stackpole Estate. The quay and its environs are now owned by the National Trust and are within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).  The project can briefly be described as the civil engineering works for remedial measures to the quay walls and grout stabilisation of the core.

Construction Characteristics

Stackpole Quay supports a thriving local fishing community and the project was commissioned to improve facilities for the fishermen. Their advice on certain works, including mooring point locations, rock clearance on beach, and the re-profiling of shingle, was sought at various site meetings. In addition, sensitivity needed to be shown to the nature of Stackpole Quay. As well as having historical significance it is a popular tourist attraction, the base for many educational and "adventure" activities, and the location of upmarket holiday cottages. All these elements had to be considered in the management and successful completion of this project.
